Cold Red Review
Rock Midgets
Rating: 3/5
Niota are an intriguing band, blending elements of Math metal and Hardcore
to create a rather interesting sound. The guitar work is performed expertly
by guitarists Hugh Harvey and Andy Pritchard with some really beautiful
sounding hooks creating a very dominating presence in the songs. The interesting
hybrid of complex song structuring that is predominant in many math metal
bands is diluted nicely to fit the hardcore lyrics and vocal styles so
they merge together in harmony to create pleasant sounding pieces of music.
The only problem that I find personally is that the harsh growling vocals
sometimes feel slightly out of place when placed alongside the music and
the bands guitar work has an uneasy habit of repeating at bad times. The
clean, decipherable lyrics do make a diverse and refreshing change from
the endless assault of lacklustre monotone barking that many other bands
produce in this genre; however due to no fault on the singer's part I
find his gruff vocals a little boring, sounding suppressed rather than
flowing.
Niota have fused the Math Metal and Hardcore genres to create a differentiation
between them and the swarm of tedious clones that come from these genres.
A promising future.
